Scarface And The MobTuesday is about to rear her lovely head around the corner, and if you were watching football this weekend you were inundated with Scarface video game and DVD advertisements. The new Platinum Edition is the 867th DVD redux of the film, and it's an easy buy even if I own the Anniversary Edition. From what I hear, the reason to smack down the hard-earned bucks is the digitally enhanced score and the Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1 soundtracks. I'm half Cuban, so it was pretty much a staple movie for me as a kid whether my parents wanted me to see it or not. Flat-out, I love the movie. Now that that's out of the way, it's time to anger the mob. Grab your pitchforks and light your torches because what I am about to say is going to rock the very foundations of your existence. Hip-Hop artists, grab your gats, for I say Scarface is not a "great movie." It's an entertaining movie, a guilty pleasure. It's very funny. It's violent. It is wonderfully over-the-top in almost every way. It's also incredibly cheesy. That's DePalma for you. You're either a Brian DePalma guy or you're not, and I'm a DePalma guy. Heck, I'm one of the few people on this earth who actually loved Femme Fatale. But DePalma classics like Scarface and Body Double have suffered through the years because of the level of Velveeta busting through their pores. I normally wouldn't even make an issue of this because, like I said, I'm a fan of the movie. However, I got into an hour-long argument yesterday when one of my good friends compared Scarface to Goodfellas and The Godfather. That's like comparing Top Gun to Saving Private Ryan. Now, I know what you're thinking ... what kind of loser gets into an hour-long argument over that? First off, me. Second, it was really an hour-long argument spread out over six hours of football (commercial breaks and half-times are the only available slots on Sundays). Anyway, I'll be purchasing my copy tomorrow, and I'd like to get into the work Pacino did in that movie. Till then, you can watch the entire movie in 90 seconds (explicit language).
