Sam Champion, longtime weatherman for New York's ABC affiliate, has been named weather anchor of ABC News' "Good Morning America," the network announced Tuesday.
To be based at the program's Times Square studio, Champion also will serve as weather editor of ABC News, reporting on environment- and weather-related issues, the network said.
He begins these duties September 5, the same day Chris Cuomo makes his bow as the broadcast's news anchor, joining anchors Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts.
A fixture since 1988 on New York's WABC-TV, which he will leave to take on the new job, the 45-year-old Champion is already familiar to many "GMA" viewers from numerous appearances as fill-in weathercaster.
