Universal Pictures' "Serenity"
Universal Pictures' "Serenity" - Universal Pictures

Welcome back to DVD Tuesday, where we do all the watchin' so you can have all the learnin'. In this edition we'll cover my favorite sci-fi western, the hardest R I ever saw, and a movie that could possibly make you swear off of movies. Don't worry, I'll tell you which one to avoid so you're completely safe. Let's do this thing!

Strong Buy:

1. Serenity Collector's Edition
I can't recommend Serenity enough. Based on the popular television show Firefly, it's a science fiction western. That alone should convince you of the innovation factor. As I've interviewed Joss a number of times I'm the most biased source out there, but he's earned the bias and I think just about anyone could enjoy this popcorn flick. Be a buddy. Buy it.

Moderate Buy:

2. South Park The Complete Tenth Season
Nothing makes me feel older than the fact that South Park has put together ten seasons. Remember the grand old days where you could get in trouble just for watching it? The show was blamed for all of our cultural deficiencies, we the great unwashed. I haven't watched it in many years but I'm sure it's as solid as ever, though the fact that it even has been permitted ten years of existence is somewhat disappointing. How can we rebel if the man is blessing us?

3. Robocop 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition
My recollection of Robocop was that it was the hardest R I ever saw. Research bears this out, the MPAA initially rated it X (now called NC-17). I remember sitting in the theater and being stunned by this one. I think it would still come off hardcore even today. The Collector's Edition offers two discs with the making of, deleted scenes, and three new features. But the real reason to buy this is history. This was a sea change with regards to cinematic movie violence.

Data Inconclusive:

4. The Lives of Others
To me this screamed "pretentious" which is why I skipped it in the first place. However as it's #77 on the IMDB.com's 250 perhaps I'm mistaken. In which case it is I who reeks of pretentiousness.

5. Ugly Betty The Complete First Season
The only thing I remember about last year's Golden Globes is Ugly Betty winning a couple. I also never quite figured out how the show had any relationship to The Devil Wears Prada but my sources tell me it does. All in all, I don't have the data but enough people have liked this that it warrants mention.

Not On this Planet:

6. Perfect Stranger
Words won't do justice to how bad this movie is but what other weapon do I have available? If you must rent it toss back a few cold ones first so that the "acting" isn't as noticeable. Maybe throw that "mute" button on too, just to be safe.

That's all for now. MaryAnn will see you next Tuesday!
