Will she or won't she? Britney Spears is reportedly in talks to return to MTV's Video Music Awards.

Apparently Britney Spears isn't afraid to return to the scene of a crime. One year after her disastrous turn at the MTV Video Music Awards -- where she looked dazed and confused as she sleepwalked through her performance of "Gimme More" -- Britney is in talks with the network to show up at this year's ceremony on Sept. 7.

MTV is currently running promotional ads featuring a perky, coherent Britney bantering with host Russell Brand, best known to U.S. audiences as the British rocker boyfriend in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Britney seems game to poke fun of herself, as the pair chat without mentioning the 9,000-lb elephant in the room. Seriously, there is a real-life pachyderm just chilling in the background. Considering Britney's previous MTV co-stars include a live python and Madonna, I'm going to say: Upgrade!

Rumors of a Britney appearance will no doubt pique curiosity in the flagging MTV awards show, which used to be edgy and has now become practically a parody of itself.

Britney is reportedly working on a new album on which she reunites with super-producer Rodney Jerkins. Early word has it the album will have plenty of uptempo, catchy dance beats and is slated for an early 2009 release. Which means this fall wouldn't be a bad time to crank up the publicity machine and remind fans that Britney had a singing career before becoming a tabloid trainwreck.
