(Legally) Blonde Ambition
Can you handle the perkiness of MTV's new Legally Blonde reality show?

Fifty Elle Woods wannabes took over New York City last week. The hopeful contestants of MTV's cumbersomely titled Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods toured the city in pink (of course), double-decker buses. Legally Blonde premieres on MTV tonight (Monday, June 2) at 10pm EST. MTV has had a relationship with the show since last fall, when Legally Blonde: The Musical was broadcast in its entirety on the network. I enjoyed the special much more than I expected to. In fact, I have yet to erase it from my TiVo! Blonde is a good match for MTV's demographic with a young cast, pop-inspired score, and a fun, familiar plot. Eventually, those 50 bundles of perkiness who were unleashed on New York last week will be narrowed down to one lucky winner. She will take over for Laura Bell Bundy, Broadway's current Elle Woods (who was Tony-nominated for originating the role). Legally Blonde, which has been running since April 2007, is a popular show and will probably continue to run for at least several more months after the new Elle begins her tenure. Hillary Duff's (ironically) less-blonde, less-famous sister, Haylie is the executive producer and "mentor." She knows her stuff when it comes to the ups and downs of Broadway, as she is currently appearing in Hairspray. The judges will be Paul Canaan, a musical theater vet who is currently in the Legally Blonde ensemble; Heather Hach, who wrote the show's book; director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell; and casting director Bernard Telsey. Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods is not the only reality show pandering to musical theater geeks this summer. High School Musical: Get in the Picture will premiere later this month on ABC. * * * Amy Kane spends as much quality time with her television as possible, when she's not busy at her day job as a cube dweller.
