I Have This Great Idea for a Romantic Comedy!
Just promise not to steal this idea and take it to Hollywood.

I have a great idea for a romantic comedy! I'm going to share it with you on the condition that you promise not to steal it. I'm serious! I will be really bummed if someone takes this idea, because it's really fresh and original. So there's this woman, right? Her name is Kate. She works at a magazine in New York City. She's really pretty but for some reason she's unlucky in love. She has a funny best friend, Marci, who is not as pretty as she is. Maybe she's even kind of fat. Marci lives her life vicariously through Kate and is far more interested in Kate's love life than she is in her own. Maybe Marci isn't a chubby girl but a bitchy gay guy. I am open to the possibility of changing that. One day Kate is in the elevator going up to her office and there's a really rude guy in there, and she tells him off and accidentally spills coffee on him. Then she gets to work and discovers that the guy is HER NEW BOSS! I know, right?! His name is Jeremy and he is slightly aloof and possibly British. So now Kate and Jeremy totally hate each other, and they're always bickering about stuff, but in a cute, funny way. (I do not want this movie to get too serious!) Kate's friend Marci thinks Jeremy is handsome, and Kate sort of agrees but she hates him anyway. And Marci is all like, "Girl, you should totally tap that!" Oh! Maybe Marci is a sassy black friend instead of a funny fat friend or a bitchy gay friend. Hmm. I will have to think about that. Anyway, Jeremy has a funny best friend, too, probably Horatio Sanz. This friend is married and is always telling Jeremy how awful it is to be married because you never get to have sex and your wife bosses you around all the time. I think there is probably a lot of humor in that because it's so true, yet movies and TV shows hardly ever talk about it. Then Jeremy lies to Kate about something. I haven't decided what yet. But something major. Then there's like a convention or something and Kate and Jeremy have to travel together, and the car breaks down in the rain and they can't get cell phone reception so they have to stay at a dumpy motel -- and there's only one room left! So it's all awkward and funny and stuff, and that's the night when they finally admit their feelings for each other and fall in love. But then when they get back to New York, Kate finds out about whatever the thing was that Jeremy lied about, and she's mad that he lied to her, and they break up. This will be the part of the movie that is very sad. I think we should have a montage of scenes where Kate and Jeremy miss each other while a pretty pop song by Kelly Clarkson or someone like that plays on the soundtrack. I think that would really convey the fact that Kate and Jeremy miss each other, and also the fact that Kelly Clarkson has a new song out. In the climactic finale, Kate is about to fly back home to Iowa to start her life over, still mad at Jeremy. But Jeremy won't give up! He rushes to the airport, but he can't get past the security checkpoint because he doesn't have a boarding pass, so he hurries to a ticket counter and buys a ticket as fast as he can, then goes through security and sees Kate as she's just about to get on the plane. He grabs the microphone from the desk and says, over the public address system, "Kate, I love you!" Well, probably more of a speech than that, but that's the gist of it. Kate changes her mind and runs to Jeremy's arms, and the other travelers and airport employees burst into applause. Do you think a studio will take a chance on my quirky, unusual screenplay? I hope so! I don't want to "sell out" by writing something commercial or generic! * * * * * Most Popular Stories
