Grey's Anatomy Is Getting Tired, Seriously

This week on Grey's, Meredith talked about her issues some more. In case any of us weren't paying attention during the first 66 episodes.

This week, Brooke Smith joined the regular cast as Dr. Erica Hahn (“The New Burke”). Working with her has made Izzie consider competing with Cristina for a cardio specialty. A rivalry between those two could be interesting, especially since Hahn seems predisposed to make decisions in Izzie’s favor. Smith (The Silence of the Lambs, Crossing Jordan) has made a career out of playing tough women; I think we can look for her to deliver more speeches to the residents like the one she gave Cristina last week. Plus, she has fantastic hair, which is practically a prerequisite for this show.

Meanwhile, George and Izzie planned a romantic evening. You know what bugs me about this storyline is that these two just don’t have any romantic chemistry. I thought it was far more compelling when Izzie was opposed to Callie and George’s marriage as a concerned friend who didn’t think such a quick wedding was in George’s best interest. Now they are making it look like she just wanted him for herself the whole time.

My hope is that they’ll eventually realize they were wrong about being in love... their emotions were just all confused by the traumatic events of the past year. Denny’s and George’s dad’s deaths, etc. I doubt that will happen, but I think it’s the best way to fix the show. Although, their decision that they are both too tired for sex was a step in this direction. Yay!

Oh, goodie. Meredith hemmed and hawed some more about her abandonment issues this week. Doesn’t it seem like we go through this every week? Blah blah blah, Derrick wants a commitment and Meredith isn’t ready, blah, blah. Blah. She drowned! She has daddy issues! And mommy issues! We know! We remember from the first three seasons.

This week, for help with this, she turned to... Cristina? Who, entertainingly, turned to a textbook for the answers. That was amusingly typical of her. But it doesn’t help Meredith much. She needs to bite the bullet and get therapy.

I hope she gets it from Edward Hermann’s Norman, who left the surgery intern program for psych. They could use more of a psych presence on this show. Though, they do have a nameless, emo-haired, Indian-American psych resident that shows up every once in awhile, but he’s never been given much to do. Edward Hermann needs to always be on my TV. He's a fine actor, adorable, and grandfatherly. (And also crazy tall. Which is irrelevant, I guess.)

With Alex’s encouragement, Lexie finally displayed some semblance of awesomeness this week. He convinced a reluctant bride in a dress-holding contest to let go of the dress and get the shoulder surgery she needed by telling her declining treatment will give her a hunchback for her big day. And then Alex brought Lexie home, where Meredith saw them post hook-up. Awkward!

Grey’s Anatomy used to be the show I looked forward to the most every week. It’s still entertaining, but it’s not that good anymore, which is too bad. I think if they’d just wrap up (or shake up) some of the old, tired storylines like the Izzie/George, Meredith/Derrick relationships, and nurture some new ideas, like Bailey’s potential marriage trouble (and maybe a new love interest for Cristina soon?), things will improve.

Amy Kane spends as much quality time with her television as possible, when she's not busy at her day job as a cube dweller.
