Welcome to the Golden Globes Live Blog! Take a seat, relax, and let us do the commentary! 7:13pm: Amanda Seyfried, on Meryl Streep: "She's gonna win it!" (pause) "I mean, is she gonna win it?" Can't blame her. If I made Mamma Mia! I'd be drunk too. 7:19pm: Blair Underwood on the rojo carpeta. I loved him in Just Cause.
7:23pm: Aaron Eckhart on The Dark Knight: "It's nice to make a movie that people actually see." Well then. Not enough folks saw Thank You for Smoking, eh? 7:27pm: Why do they keep asking about Heath Ledger? What do they expect the actors to say? Just plain awkward. 7:30pm: So far the NBC talent gets a D grade. Tiki, Brooke, and the blonde chick haven't been impressive. 7:31pm: Wowsers, Mr. Piven on his mercury poisoning, making it sound legit. Good scoop by NBC, I raise them to a C! 7:34pm: I think Dustin Hoffman has the right attitude. That attitude? Complete and utter apathy for all things overproduced. 7:41pm: Genius question to Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio -- "Are you going to work together again?" Answer -- "Um, sure whatever. Hey, look, they are giving out drink tickets!". Okay, not really. But that's what I would have said. 7:49pm: In the history of the red carpet what percentage of interviews have been interesting? 1% or 2%? I would say 2% tops. And waaaaaay less than that tonight. Something like zero percent this evening have been solid. 7:55pm: Salma Hayek, to NBC interviewer: "Umm, I have to go, the show is about to start." Here, here Salma. Let's get this show on the road.
8:03pm: Kate Winslet wins Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role for The Reader. Not a great movie, but she was definitely good in it. I still think Viola Davis is the odds-on favorite for The Academy Award. 8:08pm: Sting presents the Best Original Song Golden Globe to "The Wrestler" – Bruce Springtsteen. A mild upset, as Wall-E would have been my call. I guess you never bet against The Boss. 8:14pm: Good question from the readers: "Why is a Golden Globe worth less than an Oscar?" Easy answer: The Golden Globes are determined by international critics. The Oscars come directly from your peers. It's the difference between winning "Salesman of the month" and "Employee of the Year." Only one of those means you're beloved by people who (theoretically) know what they are talking about. 8:17pm: Tom Wilkinson wins Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role - Television for John Adams. Good for him. His Ben Franklin was spot-on. 8:18pm: Laura Dern wins for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role - Television. She was solid in Recount ... and, as it's the only one of the performances I saw, I'll support the decision. 8:20pm: HBO is two for two on the TV side. 8:24pm: A few more TV awards before we get back to film. The only guy I'm pulling for is Michael C. Hall's portrayal of Dexter. He's phenomenal. 8:25pm: Don Cheadle is introduced as the star of the upcoming Hotel for Dogs. Ouch. Time to get on the line to the ol' agent. 8:26pm: Burn After Reading wasn't very good. But the Hollywood Foreign Press probably didn't realize that when they nominated it. Not their fault. 8:28pm: The President of the HFP has one hell of a mustache. That's an epic effort there. 8:30pm: Gabriel Byrne wins the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Drama. Boooo! Booo! 8:32pm: I'm still smarting from them screwing over Dexter. But the Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Drama Golden Globe goes to Anna Paquin for True Blood. Nice. You might remember she's already won an Academy Award for The Piano. So between that and the topless work in True Blood I'd say she's set for life on the accolades front. 8:34pm: HBO is four for four. Yowsers. The TV theme of the night is "Get the hell off network TV if you want to win an award." 8:36pm: Wall-E is moments away from getting an award from The Jonas Brothers. Think about the global implications of THAT! 8:37pm: Ricky Gervais is still the funniest human on Earth. I would give him every hosting gig from here on out. 8:39pm: Of the Jonas Brothers I deem JOE JONAS the sketchy one. I have no reason or data to back this decision up. It just feels right. 8:41pm: Wall-E wins the Best Animated Feature Film. In other news the world keeps right on spinning. 8:42pm: If Mamma Mia! wins an award, so help me God... 8:43pm: Nice, Sally Hawkins wins it for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. We'll take it! 8:45pm: Why does everyone put the Globe on the floor? They always hold the Oscar. Odd. Must be a weight thing. Are the Golden Globes made of lead? 8:46pm: It's also hilarious that they have the audience seated at dinner tables. Can we play Ms. Hawkins off? I've got a bar tab to run up. 8:49pm: For the record, my two friendly wagers this evening are Slumdog Millionaire for Best Picture and Anne Hathaway for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. If I don't win someone's gonna feel my wrath. And by wrath I mean tears. And by tears I mean I will have lost both money and pride on something as silly as The Golden Globes. 8:52pm: I feel like I'm supposed to like Benjamin Button, as a lover of film, but I just found it to be really dull. Perhaps Michael Bay has finally broken my spirit. 8:54pm: If P. Diddy wins a Golden Globe I think we officially start the Doomsday Clock again. 8:56pm: John Adams wins for Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made for Television. HBO keeps on trucking. Tom Hanks accepts ... which seems unfair. I feel like he's won stuff before, hasn't he? 8:58pm: Heath Ledger wins Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for a tiny little film called The Dark Knight. Have you heard of this one? Yep. Big in Europe I hear. 9:00pm: In all seriousness Ledger was nothing short of amazing in that film. He changed the game. We miss you Heath. 9:03pm: The schedule says a clip for Frost/Nixon is coming up. But SNL already beat them to it last night: 9:08pm: Waltz With Bashir wins for Best Foreign Language Film. I have no issue with that. 9:10pm: An American Crime is the most brutally depressing film ever. Avoid at all costs, even if Keener wins here. 9:11pm: Laura Linney takes it for John Adams. That's the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television if you're scoring at home. Though I can't imagine why you would be. HBO is now 42 for 42 at The Golden Globes this evening. They've just taken possession of this live blog too. Sorry, can't fight them anymore. They just win, baby. 9:18pm: Seriously, see In Bruges. Most underrated film of 2008. 9:20pm: Slumdog Millionaire wins for Best Screenplay - Motion Picture and the coronation has begun. This film is winning The Academy Award. It's happening. Let's all get comfortable with it. 9:23pm: Alec Baldwin wins for Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Musical Or Comedy. Take that HBO! NBC just served you, a single award for the evening style! 9:26pm: Do you think all the actors hit the buffet line during commercials at The Golden Globes? And do they serve only foreign food? 9:28pm: Only like a dozen awards left! And most of them are film ones! Plus Steven Spielberg is getting the Cecil B. DeMille Award! I don't know why I'm writing in all exclamation points! Someone tase me, bro! 9:30pm: Whoever picks the clips for the movies clearly hates movies. The Reader isn't great, but that clip made it look worthless. Next year let me pick the clips. I'll bring both the noise and the funk. 9:31pm: Paul Giamatti wins Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for his performance in John Adams. HBO takes it, but they had four of the five nominees. So I'm not going to count this one as much as the others. Hey, my live blog, my rules. 9:34pm: Only three TV awards left. Thank the maker for that. 9:37pm: 30 Rock wins the Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Musical Or Comedy. My only real issue here is that I don't believe there are any musicals left on television. Bring back Viva Laughlin now. Or else! 9:38pm: Tracy Morgan is damn good too. He calls Jeff Zucker his "boy" and refers to Lorne Michaels by the affectionate term "Lorny Mike." That will never get old. Like Natalie Portman said, I'd like to roll up on NBC and smack the S* out of Jeff Zucker (for not showing these awards live on the West Coast). 9:43pm: Pierce Brosnan mentions he never thought the songs of ABBA would be turned into a movie. Yeah bud, that's because it doesn't make any sense. 9:46pm: The Best Original Score - Motion Picture Golden Globe goes to Slumdog Millionaire. If this were a fight they would have called it. Slumdog now has Best Picture in the bag. 9:47pm: Gotta be Tina Fey for Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Musical Or Comedy. 9:48pm: Yep. Tina Fey wins. C'mon, the Hollywood Foreign Press saw the Palin stuff too. There was no other reasonable choice. 9:50pm: Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, and Best Comedy. 30 Rock is making a legitimate case that they should be on HBO, aren't they? 9:54pm: Cecil B. DeMillage coming up. It will probably go on for about 15 minutes. Feel free to take bathroom breaks or get snacks, because you won't be missing much. 9:56pm: Little known fact: Cecil B. DeMille NEVER WON the Cecil B. DeMille award. I know. Shocking, right? 9:57pm: The only problem I have with this award is that they make it sound like Spielberg cured cancer. He's a fantastic director, but he's lived a dream life. He makes films for a living. Billions of people would trade places with him. Does he really need to be worshiped too? 9:58pm: Plus, and not for nothing, he also made Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That should definitely count against him. 10:02pm: They nuked a fridge in that one. Remember? And there were monkeys that saved people. I'm just saying. 10:04pm: I do like that the DeMille Globe is even more special. It seems to have an angel on it. 10:07pm: We're ten minutes in. He's wrapping it up though. 10:09pm: Look, I love Steven Spielberg, don't get me wrong. I love his movies. But if you've got it (as Steven does) then you don't need the HFP to give you a 10-minute forum. You just don't. 10:12pm: You ever watch that Medium? NBC really wishes you would. Just do them a solid and check it out. Please. Seriously, Medium on NBC. Can't miss it. 10:13pm: Best Director - Motion Picture goes to Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire. I interviewed him a couple months ago, which I'm sure really helped matters. You're welcome Danny! 10:16pm: My friend Amanda just called and asked that she be mentioned. Ladies and gents, your first Film.com live blog shout-out! We're making history here. 10:17pm: I loved Revolutionary Road but I can't see it winning much. Slumdog has the awards season on lockdown, and if it doesn't I think Button sneaks in. 10:18pm: Sandra Bullock is alive and well! Somebody call off the search.
Colin accepts and may very well be on cocaine. But that's okay, he's a winner tonight! 10:23pm: Sacha Baron Cohen presents for Best Comedy or Musical. He's also solid this evening, joining Tracy Morgan and Ricky Gervais. It's almost as if comedians are exactly what the show needs. Hmmm... 10:30pm: Vicky Cristina Barcelona wins The Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical. I dig it. Good film, deserves some love since Oscar doesn't have a comedy (or musical) category. 10:37pm: My wife is becoming cranky with the Golden Globes situation. Right at the finish line too. I can't blame her. Three hours of this is enough to kill a moderately sized yak. 10:38pm: Kate Winslet wins a SECOND Golden Globe of the night. Stunning. Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama is Kate's for Revolutionary Road. I truly hope it helps the film, though she may not survive the acceptance speech.
10:50pm: Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler wins the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama Golden Globe! Another big upset. The Wrestler gains momentum. Big losers of the night? Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon. 10:53pm: Darren Aronofsky flips Mickey Rourke off in one of the funnier moments of the evening. For the record I dig Darren Aronofsky. He's solid people (interview here). I hope he gets to do whatever the hell he wants going forward. He's the type of director we should be rewarding. 10:57pm: One award to go. And I'm thinking Slumdog Millionaire. Bold, right?
