Fall Is Here, The Women, and Burn After Reading Thoughts

Today I screen The Women. It looks like a generic version of Sex and the City - but without the built-up goodwill that one had from the television show. So I'm not too excited, though clearly I'm not the intended demographic. It does bring up an interesting question; how much does the intent of the film matter? Should we have children reviewing kid's films? Do we need comic book fans to review superhero fare? I don't have an answer; it's just something I ponder in my off hours.

That said, anything is better than what August put us through. In the next few weeks I'll get to see:

Burn After Reading
Righteous Kill
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People
Ghost Town
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Eagle Eye

If I had to bet I'd say 50% of those will be average. But I do hold out hope for Nick and Norah and the early Todd McCarthy bashing of Burn After Reading encourages me; when the Coen Bros. are at their best comedically I think they lose mainstream critics (Lebowski, Raising Arizona, Hudsucker Proxy).

When will I consider myself a mainstream critic? When someone misquotes me on a poster. A fellow can dream.

Until the real movies arrive I'm still touting Tropic Thunder. Or The Wire: Season Five if you're the sort who waits for DVD (as I am). Tomorrow I'll be posting some stills from Burn After Reading and perhaps giving away a few Pacino/DeNiro items. That's right, another Big Hitter column as soon as tomorrow! Your cup runneth over, right? But I've come to the conclusion that I've got to write this baby on a regular basis if I eventually want to take over the world via movie related musings.

But until next time please enjoy this digital short - a highly hilarious take on finally cracking down on the Canadians.
