The Emmys telecast managed to be mildly entertaining in spite of -- and definitely not because of -- its five reality show hosts, all of whom should stick to their day jobs. That opening monologue? Painful. Jeremy Piven put it best while accepting his award for his role as Ari Gold in Entourage: "What if I just kept talking for 12 minutes, what would happen? That was the opening."

Some quick highlights from last night's ceremony:

Hurrah! James Spader didn't win! More importantly, the much-deserving Bryan Cranston did. Granted, no one's watching Breaking Bad on AMC, but I support good television even if I can't make myself actually watch it.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's playful onstage banter reminded me of why we miss them together on SNL's Weekend Update desk.

Presenter Ricky Gervais managed to look like he was actually having fun -- unlike others who took themselves a little too seriously -- cracking that he didn't bother to show up last year, but still won.

Tom Hanks and Sally Field shared a cute moment of genuine affection as Forrest Gump's movie mom presented the award for best miniseries to Hanks-produced John Adams: "How are you doing, honey?" "I'm fine, mom."

First-time presenter Lauren Conrad, whose much-hyped Emmy dress designs were boring but not offensive, actually did a cute ad-lib and made scowly David Boreanaz -- star of "The Bones," according to Heidi Klum -- crack a smile.

Tina Fey's acceptance speech for best comedy actress, thanking her parents for "somehow raising me to have confidence that is disproportionate with my looks and abilities. Well done. That is what all parents should do."
