Elizabeth Taylor, one of Michael Jackson's dearest and oldest friends, was packing for her trip to see his comeback concert in London when she heard the news of his death.

"My heart ... my mind ... are broken," said the movie legend, 77, in a statement Friday. "I loved Michael with all my soul and I can't imagine life without him."

The two superstars shared a loving and enduring friendship over many years, which continued throughout Jackson's legal troubles. She had planned to support him at his opening concert in London next month.

Taylor was too devastated to issue a statement on Thursday after the pop icon died suddenly in Los Angeles of cardiac arrest.

"I don't think anyone knew how much we loved each other," Taylor said. "The purest, most giving love I've ever known. Oh God! I'm going to miss him. I can't yet imagine life with out him."

Taylor has a photo of Jackson inscribed with the words, "To my true love Elizabeth, I love you forever."
