There's no better time of year to glam it up with party dresses.

It's the holidays -- a time for tradition, family, giving and (most wonderfully) parties! Even though we feel the tightening belt of recession all around us, when it comes to dressing for holiday festivities there is no better way to let loose than getting spruced up like a Christmas tree. We're dressing with luxury even if it's just a facade, so put away the sweaters and break out the jeweled, velvet and sheer-detailed dresses. You can find holiday looks at just about any price point; just keep these styles in mind to look fresh, fun and festive.

Need some coverage from the cold, but still want to show some skin? Opt for a look like Leighton Meester's black dress with sheer and beaded neck and sleeves. There's something so classy about sheer touches on a dress -- as long as it's not over your whole back like a figure skating costume. Stick with black for a sophisticated look.

Why should Christmas trees get all the glitz? With all the bright decorations around, rise to the occasion or risk looking like a tree skirt. You can't walk into a store without spotting a sequined, beaded or jeweled dress these days. Throw one on for instant cheer.

If you'd rather forego the flashy details, opt for texture instead. Nothing says winter like velvet, and thankfully it comes in more colors than just forest green. Check out Diane Lane's ultra-elegant look. Velvet was all over the runways so forget about the ruffled toddler dresses you've seen and pick one up in your size. Remember how good velvet felt as a kid? It's even better now.

Don't forget finishing touches too. This is no time to exercise restraint; go ahead and put on your better jewelry and red lipstick. Speaking of restraint -- after you're all glammed up, it's the perfect time to stand near the mistletoe.
