Do People Want to See Will Ferrell in Yet Another Sports Comedy?
Will Ferrell seeks to escape sports comedy hell in Semi-Pro.
New Line Cinema
HOLY MOTHER OF ALL THAT'S HOLY!!! THERE'S ANOTHER WILL FERRELL MOVIE AND IT BURNS!!! OH MY GOD IT BURNS!!! Sound familiar? If you've ever watched a Will Ferrell sports comedy it should. A task that was once accomplished by several monkeys left alone in a room with typewriters was recently modernized by collegehumor.com when they created the Will Ferrell Movie Generator. In a stunning work of coding that must have taken minutes upon minutes of painstaking programming, they managed to encapsulate the very soul of this subsection of comedy. That is, if you could even say that it has a soul. Let's face it: Farrell set out to ride this trick until the wheels came off, and he finally has. The gag is old, the films are beyond predictable, and our patience has officially worn thin. When a guy knows only one joke, it doesn't matter how good the joke is -- eventually everyone's heard it and eventually everyone gets tired of it. What will it take before we've seen the last of these? Running out of sports? We know that there is a public out there ready to watch anything ... for a while. Will one of these sports comedies have to flop before Ferrell moves on? In case you've been living in a research facility deep within the core of the Earth or just came back from working in that secret station on the dark side of the moon, here's the basic rundown of ALL of these films. Ferrell plays an egotistical, misogynistic, complete jerk of a guy who thinks he's at the top of the game. The joke is that while everyone else around him seems to think he's awesome, he really isn't. He's awful. And that's funny. Right? Eventually a rival comes out of the woodwork and knocks him from his rightful place of glory. After a montage showing how silly and low he has fallen, it's time to gear up for a training montage. Enter silly training techniques (THANKS Dodgeball!) Comedy Gold, right? I won't spoil the ending for you by telling you that he always prevails and gets the girl. Oh yeah. And at some point Ferrell gets naked. Don't ask me why. He just does. Maybe it's some kind of performance art/Mariah Carey joke or something. Or maybe pudgy white guys running around naked is funny to someone. I don't know. All I know is that Ferrell needs to stop. But it doesn't exactly look like he will. He stepped away from these films with the brilliant Stranger than Fiction, but it was mostly overlooked. His next film, while not a sports comedy, looks to be the same movie with a step-brother instead of a professional rival. Oh. Joy. Really. I can't wait. C.
