It appears that Lindsay Lohan knows she's been an idiot this past year and claims she's learned her lesson and is now on the road to Wellville. Forgive me for being cynical and unready to give her a clean bill of health. She's a long ways away from proving she can get her career back on track. The girl has a lot of penance to do before she wins any sense of trust. But I'm never one to root against the underdog.

Now, for the most part, Lohan shouldn't make the mistake of trying to be taken seriously again right away. That's the long and lonely road to nowhere. She'd have to be very careful. I'm making it my personal job to try and keep Lohan out of the gutter, not in, so I've put forth a list of directors who can save this talented young woman's career. Here we go:

Wes Anderson or David O. Russell
A safe bet is for Lohan to choose strong supporting roles rather than go for juggernaut leads. She has talent. She can act. So why not take part in a Wes Anderson or David O. Russell ensemble and raise a few eyebrows? Most people will think she's smart (if she's good) just for appearing in these artier, comedic films and odds are she'll get some nice critical reception. It won't take too much time from her (hopefully) toned-down partying antics to shoot a role like this either. Win-win.

Tim Burton
I think Tim Burton may be officially out of his funk after his top-notch work on Sweeney Todd and this is the perfect opportunity for Lohan to go dark. She should seek out a lead role in some weird and dark Tim Burton film immediately. I'm not sure how good she'll look pale, though. Those freckles are a veritable force.

Judd Apatow or Greg Mottola
Nothing heals a career more than bringing the funny. Normally I would have slipped the Farrelly brothers into the mix but they couldn't buy a real hit these days. It isn't a comeback unless people see the darn movie (unless it's artier fare like a Wes Anderson movie of course). Apatow and Mottola are the new BMOCs and she should strike while the iron is hot.

Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez
These are two of the more obvious choices. Robert Rodriguez made Josh Hartnett cool and Elijah Wood scary. He even turned Rose McGowan into a cult icon. And I could see Lohan pulling off a sexy role like the one Bridget Fonda gave in Tarantino's Jackie Brown. This is the guy, after all, who rescued John Travolta's career and put Samuel L. Jackson on the map.

Joe Wright
This would require two steps. First, Lohan would have to acquire a British accent. Second, she'd have to murder Keira Knightley (Wright likes that gal). After that, she's gold.
