I don't think there has ever been this much speculation about what a first lady would wear to the Inaugural Ball, but Michelle Obama has defied all sorts of conventions when it comes to first lady fashion. During her time in the spotlight, Michelle has impressed everyone, from fashionistas to Vanity Fair, with her knowledge of young designers and her penchant for feminine styles as opposed to those boxy skirt suits first ladies so often resort to. Dressing Michelle Obama for the inauguration seems to be the most sought after job since, well...the presidency. Top designers are clamoring for a chance to design a gown for the first lady to be, so Women's Wear Daily gave them a chance to play around with the idea.

WWD solicited sketches from more than twenty designers, some of whom contributed multiple dress ideas for Mrs. Obama. See all the sketches here. There are some truly stunning gowns in the mix. Standouts include designs from Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg, Isaac Mizrahi and Monique Lhuillier. A few designers even threw in ideas for Sasha and Malia, which are of course complimentary to their mother's dress. Personally, we'd love to see Michelle in a full-length, assymetrical gown worthy of the red carpet in a bold color like purple, red or orange.

Interestingly, there were a few of the future first lady's favorite designers missing from the submissions. Namely Narciso Rodriguez, Jason Wu and Thakoon. We can only assume that these designers opted to keep their opinions to themselves or that they are actually in the running to design the first lady's dress. We can't wait to find out!
