December Movie Madness: Previewing The Dead Girl, We Are Marshall

The December insanity that critics "endure," during which we are force-fed movies by the dozens, is finally leveling off to a more normal level of seeing more movies than mere mortals on a regular basis. Today, I have only Letters from Iwo Jima, which I had hoped to see last weekend, but that never happened.

Tomorrow, my only film is The Dead Girl, from Blue Car director Karen Moncrieff. Nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, this is, apparently, about the intertwining lives of the women surrounding a murdered girl: the girl's mother, the woman who finds the girl's body, etc. The cast is great -- Toni Collette, Marcia Gay Harden, James Franco, Mary Steenburgen, and others -- so I'm looking forward to this. I'll be attending a press day on Monday at which I'll get to talk to some of the cast, so watch for my report on that next week. (I'll also attend a press day for The Painted Veil on Friday; report to come next week.)

Saturday, I'll take in the public sneak preview of We Are Marshall, another film I had hoped to see earlier this week. I'm feeling sports-movie'd out this year, what with Invincible and Gridiron Gang and Goal! The Dream Begins and Glory Road, and to say I'm not a fan of Matthew McConaughey would be an understatement. And -- uh oh -- this one is directed by McG, who is worthy of scorn merely for asking us to call him "McG," never mind the fact that he is responsible for the travesties of the Charlie's Angels movies. So, no, I'm not particularly psyched for this one.

Got a big Netflix delivery today, too, and so I plan on spending part of the weekend rewatching a couple flicks from earlier this year that I really, really liked: Brick, United 93 [my review], and Miami Vice [my review]. Will they keep their places on my ranking for the year, or will they move up ... or down? I'll finalize my best-of list next week, so stay tuned.
