Comic-Con: Watchmen and The Wolfman

Two more panels under my belt, Watchmen and The Wolfman. Those could not be any different, eh? One is a moody and paranoid look at an America under Nixon's fifth term, the central theme being the death of superhero-dom. The other involves Benicio Del Toro as a werewolf. Also, Emily Blunt stars.

All of the Watchmen cast were here in lovely San Diego for the panel, joined by illustrator Dave Gibbons and director Zack Snyder. The panel was an hour long and I'll be pulling out the best photos and quotes as soon as they free me from this comic-y prison. However, in the interim I have a quick synopsis of the dialogue free (Ahem, quit playing coy with us Mr. Snyder) footage that they showed here at THE Comic-Con.

Things featured in the Watchman footage I just saw:
Note: the whole piece was scored to angelic choral music.
Dr. Manhattan marching through Vietnam blowing people up with his finger, but this time with blood. He killed at least four fellows that I saw in the shot.
Quick shot of Rorschach's mask changing fluidly.
A smiley face button with a speck of blood running down it.
Rorschach's weapon cabinet, stocked full of firepower.
An old newspaper with one of Rorschach's historic victories highlighted.
Dan next to the Nite Owl suit, clearly sad.
A lineup for the photo back when they were all in their prime, The Comedian turns back and smiles at the original Silk Spectre.
The scene from the trailer on planet Mars.
Dr. Manhattan vaporizes someone who is pointing a weapon at him in a bar.
The intricate making of a watch.
Nixon standing at a table with advisers, his giant nose prominent.
Silk Spectre II starts to pull back her outfit, almost revealing her chest.
Jon Osterman smiles at a carnival game.
A carnival ball toss game.
A yellow police line tape.
Here's the big one though: Nite Owl II and Silk Spectre II share a kiss as a nuclear mushroom cloud springs up behind them. Solid.

Snyder clearly has a phenomenal visual eye, now it's simply the lack of dialogue released that's worrisome about this project.

At some point during this recap they made me shut my laptop case - clearly worried the word would get out about these "Watchmen" and the "Movie."

As for The Wolfman, I don't know that I can get past the name. It's not so elegant. The movie itself looks moderately interesting but the April release date and overall blunt feel of the footage shown means I can't get too excited. Sorry Benicio! Perhaps the actual movie will be better.

That is all for now. I've eaten string cheese and cookies today, washed down with the uber-powerful Gatorade Rain. It was a light purple color if that helps you place it. Still to come today: The Spirit, Kevin "I AM THE COMIC-CON" Smith, Judd Apatow, and something about "Porno."

I can't make this stuff up.

P.S. - I am the proud owner of a Watchmen t-shirt, exclusive to Comic-Con. I may sell it for food though. Hall H is no place for foolish pride.
