Terminator: Salvation Trailer

Just got done watching the Comic-Con footage for Terminator: Salvation.

My first take is that it's impressive, but also slightly worrisome. I'm a fan of the originals but I wonder if we've gone to a different place an audience. Straight action films these days lack the complexity of the original Terminator films. We saw mostly action in the footage, with Christian Bale screaming various obscenities and fighting off "evil" machines. Will this play in May of 2009? I'm not sure. Die Hard and Rambo both worked, but they were always gritty as opposed to sci-fi. More things exploding this time will not be what the doctor ordered. More plot would be.

So I guess I have more questions at this point. Does the guy who did Charlie's Angels really have the chops to pull this off? We're not exactly talking Jimmy Cameron here, eh? While the "action" and "kick-ass" facets make the Comic-Con crowd delirious they don't always add up to something worthwhile.

After all, I had to sit through an hour animated feature called Hulk vs. Wolverine in Hall H that will never be heard from again. Pleasing the Comic-Con crowd is great... but it's the start. The real world still weighs in when you hit your opening Friday. Dark Knight was able to crossover because it was a real story, not because it was more "kick-ass."

Enough pontificating though. A bit of news, it sounds like Arnold will have at least a cameo in the film. The film will take place in 2018, after "Judgment Day." Bale is John Connor and Bryce Dallas Howard plays Kate Connor, his wife. Common is his best friend and was at the panel too. His basic vibe was "so glad I'm in this movie!"

Terminator: SalvationMoon Bloodgood plays a pilot in the resistance; McG mentioned that he wanted plenty of "non lily white" folks in positions of power to show the unity that's come out of the struggle. He also mentioned he hoped that it doesn't take a nuclear holocaust to get there for our world.

The line "Come with me if you want to live" was in the footage we saw - but it came from Anton Yelchin, and it was said TO John Connor this time. A second viewing of the footage also revealed the line "You (John Connor) saved us once, so maybe you can save us again this time!" A noble hope.

We'll have more on this movie as it develops...
