Clooney vs. Keith Richards: Who Ya Got?

Can a Rolling Stone gather more box office receipts than an homage to the '30s?

Once again, it's a weekend battle of head-to-head stars. We have a truly titanic match up. And that ain’t me blowing sunshine up your skirt. In this corner we have the undisputed coolest man in the world, the Hollywood bachelor who will forever be the model for every Hollywood bachelor to ever come -- Mr. George Clooney. And in this corner we have one of the most accomplished musicians of all time. He’s played everywhere, in front of almost everyone, and done more drugs than most DEA officers ever get to see in a lifetime. Mr. Keith Richards, ladies and gentlemen. You know the rules. Let's drop the cage. Two men enter! One man leaves!

In the box office this weekend: Winner = Clooney
Not that this weekend is going to be a real barn-burner at the box office. Let’s see, a period comedy that was made not to make fun of but emulate a 1930s screwball comedy ... or a concert film by a band that has been in existence longer than most of the people reading this. Hmmm. My guess? The comedy. Clooney and company will bring in the bigger (yet not really all that big) crowds.

In the critical arena: Winner = Richards
Leatherheads doesn’t play to everybody and already there is a big divide in the critical world over it. But Scorsese could shoot two hours of people walking in the rain and the critical world would pretty much give it a pass. Fortunately for Scorsese, the word on Shine a Light is good -- the only complaint being that it is more of a concert film than a documentary.

In their careers: Winner = Tie
Come on, one is considered one of the coolest guys of his generation. And so is the other one. Both will be working until they die. And both will be talked about long after they are gone. These two are both living legends. It doesn’t get better than that.

In a fight: Winner = Clooney
Unless Richards has "powered up" before hand. There are a lot of things in this world that will keep you fighting after having broken a hip. Keith has taken all of them.

Overall Winner = Clooney
His name will come up a lot this weekend. And even those that don’t like this movie will still have some level of respect for it. Clooney takes the weekend.
