I've said it before and I'll say it again: whatever The View is paying Rosie, she should demand they double it. Whatever the topic du jour, Rosie can manage to toss in some hugely inflammatory comment that worsens the situation and puts all eyes firmly on The View. Up this week: the Clay Aiken/Kelly Ripa scandal.

I'll backtrack a bit: on Monday, American Idol's Clay Aiken -- who has been notoriously evasive about the is-he-or-isn't-he questions surrounding his preference in romantic partners -- filled in for Regis Philbin on Regis and Kelly. Aiken, probably frustrated by the fact that no one else but Regis Philbin is allowed to talk -- ever -- when Kelly Ripa's on camera (although as a quick aside I have to admit that I absolutely adore her), semi-jokingly put his hand over her mouth (check out the video). Ripa, visibly annoyed (because no one else but Regis Philbin is allowed to be funny -- ever -- when Kelly Ripa's on camera), responded by saying, "I don't know where that hand's been, honey."

Done and done, right? Enter Rosie O'Donnell. On The View this morning, Rosie called Ripa's remarks homophobic, saying, "If that was a straight man, if that was a cute man, if that was a guy that she didn't question his sexuality, she would have said a different thing. To me that's a homophobic remark." (Check out the video).

Oh, I've just received a text message from Clay Aiken. He'd like me to relay a brief message to Rosie O'Donnell: "thx so much for ur support what i rly wanted right now was more attn on my sexual identity ur the best rosie :)"

Ripa called in to the show to point out that Rosie was being ridiculous, and that her statement was in no way homophobic. After watching the footage, I agree, and I'd even go so far as to say that it wasn't funny, either. (Sorry, Kelly, I still love you!!! Will you be my sister?)

The blogging community is accusing O'Donnell herself of having outed Aiken with this morning's comment. Aiken's sexual orientation has long been an issue of discussion on the Internet, but, let's be honest, our silly little "weblogs" have a limited reach, so thank goodness we can count on Rosie to raise the question on network television, right out there for Aiken's middle-America fan base to gawk at. Thanks, Rosie. That was cool of you.
