Cinema's Best Attacks on the Statue of Liberty

Cloverfield shows the movies' latest assault on Lady Liberty. Here are some other classics.
Paramount Pictures' "Cloverfield"
Paramount Pictures

The poor Statue of Liberty. Always getting destroyed, dismantled or decapitated on the silver screen.

Take the trailer for Cloverfield for instance. Lady Liberty's head comes tumbling down the street like a bowling ball, torn off by some mysterious monster dreamed up by J.J. Abrams.

And this isn't the first flick to fracture, deface, mutilate, dismantle, or just plain annihilate one of our country's most famous symbols. What do Hollywood moviemakers have against her? Maybe the folks in L.A. are taking out some deeply suppressed anger and jealousy they have for New York City.

Or maybe it's because she's French.

Either way, here are my five favorite movies that wreck, despoil or desecrate the Big Apple's most famous female denizen.

5. X-Men:
Wolverine and Sabretooth battle it out on Lady Liberty's head. Wolverine rips off a tine on her crown with his claws.

4. The Day After Tomorrow:
The lady is frozen up to her eyeballs, along with the rest of NYC, after a blizzard caused by global warming ravages the city.

3. Ghostbusters II:
Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd use ectoplasmic goo to bring Lady Liberty to life to fight an evil ghost. Technically, they didn't destroy her, but this movie was an utter disaster, so I count it just the same.

2. Deep Impact:
A tidal wave caused by an asteroid crushes the statue, and sends her head bobbing down the streets of New York. (Hmmm, sounds familiar. Is this where Abrams got the idea?)

1. Planet of the Apes:
Undoubtedly one of the most famous film scenes of all time. Charlton Heston finds the broken remains of the statue half-buried on a radioactive beach. "You Maniacs! You blew it up! God damn you all to hell!"

Ethan Morris: "Not always right, but never in doubt."
