Box Office Predictions January 26

Ryan Reynolds in Universal Pictures' "Smokin' Aces"

I can't win. These movies are so low grossing and so low quality that I'm whiffing every weekend. This week I'm betting on an R-rated movie, which is never wise, but it's the best one out there and they've advertised the living daylights out of it. If I'm going down, I'm going down with a popcorn flick.

5. Catch and Release $7.4m
This looks mercilessly awful, as in the romantic comedy that only 12-year-old girls will love, and even some of them will be saying, "No thanks." Jennifer Garner hasn't ever done a good movie. I haven't researched that, but off the top of my head it seems accurate.

4. Stomp the Yard $7.9m
This has beaten me two weekends in a row, but that insanity ends right here, right now. No more stomping. Leave the yard.

3. Night at the Museum $8.4m
Is Ben Stiller a top-five comedian at the box office? Is he number one even? You could throw Ferrell or Carell out there, but Stiller is certainly in the conversation. Which leads me to my main point: you've got to have two L's in your name to be funny. My last name? Legel.

2. Epic Movie $14.3m
This "movie" series lost all hints of funny about a decade ago. The reason they keep getting made? Low budgets and the fact that you keep going to see them the first weekend. Please stop, if only for the rest of us.

1. Smokin' Aces $15.4m
It doesn't have the most theaters, and it's only for adults. But I liked it (for a very guyish, January film) so I'm pulling for it. Since I went down with The Hitcher last weekend I've decided to start projecting with my heart, not my head.

Check back with MaryAnn on Monday, her numbers will be much closer.
