We had a quick chat with the beautiful South Korean actress, Gianna Jun, who heads the cast of the new Japanese manga film, Blood: The Last Vampire, as no-nonsense vampire hunter Saya, employed by the government to hunt and destroy demons in a post-WWII Japan.

What is appealing about playing a vampire?

Its [a vampire] supernatural power and immortality can be appealing. But, above all, I was interested in the character of Saya. When I first saw her, she looked very mysterious – unfriendly and gloomy. It was kind of shocking, but very attractive.

Do you believe in demons and supernatural stuff like that?

I’d rather say I believe the power of positive thinking than the supernatural stuff.

How did you react when director Chris Nahon first contacted, then said you had the part of Saya?

Excited! I think Saya is an appealing character to every actress.

What's Saya like?

Saya is a 16-year-old vampire hunter, a half breed of both human and vampire, who desperately tries to make an end of the war lasting for over 400 years. She has a mission to kill wicked vampires, but at the same time, she needs blood for her survival. I was attracted by her ironic destiny and loneliness.

How energetic was the role? Did you face any physical or mental challenges?

It was really hard, actually. I had a three-month hard training for this action project and it made me extremely hard. But it was nothing compared to the shooting. Have you ever hung on a wire in the rain for the whole month? I’m certainly sure it’d make you feel crazy [laugh]. There was an accident that I was bumped into a crane camera when I was hanging on a wire. It was not that serious, but at the moment, I was shocked and even depressed. I was able to get in the project because I had no idea how hard it would be before.

Would you say you are a pretty accomplished swordswoman now after this film?

Well, I pretend not to be good at swordsmanship because I never want to do it again [laugh]! Whenever I have to show my skills, however, I find myself natural to a sword. That reminds me of how hard I practiced to be Saya.

Do you know any self-defence moves in real life?

If there were any situation that I should use self-defense moves, I would cry.

What are you working on next?

I’m planning to do one of the Korean films, but nothing is decided yet.

Blood: The Last Vampire is released on 26th June in the UK.
