There is oh-so much that happens before the moment where two swooning souls speak the words “I do” to one another. I’m not talking about the wedding planning either. All that relationship work like learning to communicate, giving and taking, becoming comfortable with one another in all capacities, and so on. It’s a mess. In the movies we don’t really see any of this. If anything, many romantic comedies inspire us to have meaningful relationships that could lead to that final, matrimonial step. The movies instill a sense of envy in how passionate and wonderful the right guy (or girl) could be, because on-screen it looks like these couples have got it all figured out. My cynicism surely stems from my superior knowledge of the fact that romantic comedies are not based on real life, and they are just about visual entertainment. Though, some of the best rom-coms have the most dramatic of endings: the classic wedding breakup scene.

1. The Graduate
This 1967 romantic comedy stars a very young Dustin Hoffman as Ben Braddock, a recent college graduate with no real direction in his life. This film is a classic and if you have not seen it, I’ll try not to ruin it for you. In sum, Ben falls in love with Elaine (played by Katharine Ross), and in the infamous ending of this film, Ben travels many miles to break up her wedding. When he finally arrives, fear sets in as he believes he is too late. Banging on the glass windows above the chapel, Ben screams, “Elaine! Elaine!” A puzzled Elaine returns his gaze and utter mayhem ensues when she finally responds with the most high-pitch outburst, “BEN!” It’s just perfectly classic.

2. The Little Mermaid
Yep, I’m talking Disney. Remember that nasty octopus Ursula and her magical powers? Well, in the scene where Ursula has transformed into a human to steal the bewitched prince from Ariel, she uses her magical powers to make the prince marry her. During the ceremony animals come from air, land, and sea to stall the wedding. The scene is a hodgepodge of water squirting and animal noises all in an effort to break that ugly shell necklace Ursula wears, and which holds the magical powers that keep the prince under her spell. This on-screen wedding breakup certainly wins the Most Creative award.

3. Saving Silverman
This Jason Biggs' flick probably wins the Most Ridiculous award when it comes to wedding breakups. I mean, Neil Diamond stalled his wedding by singing and playing his guitar. The best part, in my opinion, is when his true love interest, Sandy (played by Amanda Detmer), runs down the aisle to stop him from marrying the possessive, psycho Judith (played by a crazed Amanda Peet), in hooker clothes. What was she wearing, really?

4. The Royal Tenenbaums
This movie took crazy pills than played on the big screen. However, it had a great wedding breakup scene. After Royal (Gene Hackman) and Etheline (Anjelica Huston) get their divorce, Henry (Danny Glover) and Etheline are able to plan their wedding. Before the marriage, a messed-up Tenenbaum wannabe, Eli Cash (Owen Wilson), crashes his car into the side of the Tenenbaum family's house. Though, probably one of the strangest movies ever, this temporary wedding breakup scene is golden.

5. My Best Friend's Wedding
Although this isn’t technically a wedding breakup (the about-to-be-married couple didn’t break up), the chase scene shows such a compelling effort I had to add it to my list. So, we have Jules (Julia Roberts) chasing her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) who she thinks she loves, who is chasing his fiancee Kimmy (Cameron Diaz), all over the place. This scene is so outrageous and memorable that I just couldn’t resist. Please tell me no one in real life has really done this.
