Oh, sweet summertime, we hardly knew ye. The weather is turning and the white shorts have been retired for yet another year, so it's time to reflect upon who made the summer the greatest, gave us something to talk about, and more importantly, some drama to watch. The following are our essential celebrities of summer 2009.

Jon and Kate Gosselin
Jon and Kate Gosselin, who maybe were questionably celebrities at best, before summer 2009, have firmly placed themselves in the annals of reality television history. Of course, their divorce and the security guard/much younger girlfriend rumors have been enjoyable. Throw in a call to the cops over an un-Kate-approved babysitter and behind-the-scenes footage of their blatantly ignored brood of eight, and it's practically Shakespearean. The best part about them? You know they'll do anything to keep in the news, so the best is surely yet to come.

Brangelina
Are they sleeping in separate beds? Trying for another baby? BREAKING UP? Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been in the news all summer for ridiculous rumors and wild speculation. However, for all the craziness, the times they've been seen in public together at the Cannes Film Festival and at the Inglourious Basterds premiere, they've looked lovey-dovey and like the Hollywood royalty they are. Here's to you, kids! Keep it up.

Kanye West
Kanye West always does his best to keep in the headlines. This summer was no exception. From his European gallivanting with shoestring-clad girlfriend Amber Rose, it seemed like he was always being photographed. Last week's MTV Video Music Awards firmly confirm that Kanye knows how to steal the show, as he had an uncontrolled outburst about Beyonce's loss to Taylor Swift, robbing the teenager of her moment. Although he issued an apology after being ejected from the show, it is safe to say that Kanye has still got it.

Lindsay Lohan
No matter what, I really hope Lindsay Lohan can pull through. She's a very talented young actress, but always seems to be more caught up in the tabloids than focusing on her "career." Just when you think she may have calmed down, she's accused of stealing from an photo shoot, caught on tape crying outside her ex(?)-girlfriend Samantha Ronson's apartment, and when the dust settles from that debacle, having the most public of awkward ex battles -- on Twitter. Oh, Lindsay, please just go film a movie in the desert or something and work this out of your system. Or not, and keep making amazing headlines.

Michael Jackson
Of course, the main story of the summer is the tragic loss of Michael Jackson, seemingly at the beginning of a huge comeback. The King of Pop's death is now a murder investigation, and it took a very long time for the family to find a proper place to bury Michael. Now that he is laid to rest, and the tributes are mostly over, we can look forward to Michael Jackson: This Is It, the documentary about the making of his last tour.
