At the 44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, our southern friends proved to us that although they may have grown up in trailer parks, they can wash up real nice like. And don't worry, we're not going easy on them just because they sing with a twang and prefer turquoise jewelry. Most of the stars knocked our boots off when they captured current trends like one-shouldered dresses, but there were a few that preferred to stick with the country stereotype. See all the red carpet looks.

Here's our breakdown of the ACM Awards fashion:

The Tops
As of last night, Taylor Swift has unseated Carrie Underwood as our Film.com country favorite. Her signature curls, red lips, and three gorgeous dresses were all at the top of our best list. She graced the red carpet in a fit 'n' flare deep red one-shouldered gown by Angel Sanchez, and her two performance outfits -- both metallic tank dresses -- were finished off perfectly with black cowboy boots. Carrie Underwood's night was filled with hits and misses. On the plus side, she was a blushing beauty in her powder pink one-shouldered gown on the red carpet, and she accepted her awards for Best Female Artist and Performer of the Year in a darling short, white halter with ruffled layers. Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles wore a sporty halter dress in a dusty lavender and performed in a fabulous black sequin, tuxedo jacket and distressed jeans. Julianne Hough shimmered with her long blond locks and patterned, gold sequin gown, and Jennifer Love Hewitt was sweet in a breezy white halter dress. As for country's men, Jake Owen looked sharp in a white pinstripe suit and a shaggy do, and Dierks Bentley did us a favor sporting fitted jeans and a jacket while letting his curly hair lay loose.

The Flops
nicole kidman And the bad, bless their hearts ... Though two out of her four dresses topped our list, Carrie Underwood's performance ensembles were not so chic. Her tiny dress with one sleeve was a little too Studio 54, while her maroon corset dress, with its loads of fabric, ate up the stage like The Blob. Disney starlet Miley Cyrus would have been pitch-perfect in her embellished one-shouldered gown had it not had an off-putting slit up one side. Speaking of Disney, Kellie Pickler could have been one of their princesses in her matchy-matchy bronze eye shadow and gold-scaled mermaid gown. And Nicole Kidman was a natural Cruella de Vil in an all-black sequin gown by L'Wren Scott complete with sleeves and collar. We wish we had only good things to say about Reba McEntire, the hostess of the show, but her gowns were a rainbow of dated prom dresses. Where was the show's stylist? And Keith Urban and Billy Ray Cyrus, please stop using your wives' (or daughter's) straightening irons. Seriously.
