On DVD: P.S. I Love You

Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank in Warner Bros. Pictures' 'P.S. I Love You'
Warner Bros.

Not one to shun a good chick flick, or even a bad one, when P.S. I Love You -- now available on DVD, HD DVD, and Blu-ray from Warner Home Video -- showed up on my doorstep, I found it impossible to pass up the wily Irish charms of Gerard Butler, the sappiness of the story or, most importantly, the sweet, cinematic seduction of Ms. Hilary Swank. I mean, I hold myself to be one of her longest running fans, having fallen in love with her back during the heady days of her being The Next Karate Kid. And a love that lasts 14 years… Continued

Stop, Speed Racer, Stop!

Lionsgate animated series 'Speed Racer: The Next Generation' dvd box art
Lionsgate

Hey, the oil is running out and gas is at four bucks a gallon, so of course we're bombarded with naughty automotive porn like NASCAR -- all those hussy drivers shamefully burning up the precious fluid and wantonly spewing hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. And now it's the kiddies' turn to get those last licks in on Mother Earth before the pumps run dry: Speed Racer is back! He's in the movies, and he's on TV again too, in a new Nicktoons series called -- are you ready for this? -- Speed Racer: The Next Generation. Quelle… Continued

On DVD: Light On Horror? Here Are Some Suggestions...

The Weinstein Company's 'Black Sheep'
The Weinstein Company

Man, it's been a rough few months for us horror fans. Whether suffering through a series of terrible theatrical releases like The Eye and Prom Night or the recent video schlock like One Missed Call and Inside, it's been hard to find anything worth watching. So, for the benefit of my fellow horror buffs out there, I figured I'd dust off some of my commentary about the very best of ignored horror over the last year.

Next time you're reaching for something new, reach for one of these:

The Deaths of Ian Stone (part of the recent … Continued

On DVD: The Hottie and the Nottie

Paris Hilton in Regent Releasing's 'The Hottie and the Nottie'
Regent Releasing

Editor's note: I'd like to personally thank The Evil Beet, who -- when this DVD arrived here at the Film.com stratospheric flying platform -- stepped up to the challenge when all others, including yours truly, shrank away to watch something, anything other than this DVD of one of the worst-reviewed movies since, like, forever. There's no one more schooled in the ways of The Paris than the fearless Ms. Beet, and we thank… Continued

On DVD: Gamers

Monterey Video's 'Gamers' dvd box art
Monterey Video

With tired old jokes and lame writing, gamers get played by clueless filmmakers.

When Film.com's new DVD editor sent out an e-mail asking who wanted to review the new DVD for the 2006 indie comedy Gamers, I fired an e-mail back so fast your head would spin. I'm something of a Dungeons and Dragons dork. I've seen GamerZ, The Gamers and The Gamers: Dorkness Rising. I wrote a portion of a Dungeons & Dragons supplement released last year. And recently, I wrote an early review of the upcoming fourth edition which still gets me… Continued

On DVD: I'm Not There

Cate Blanchett as a young Bob Dylan in The Weinstein Company's "I'm Not There"
The Weinstein Company

OK, so I'm not much of a Bob Dylan fan. In fact, I'm not a Bob Dylan fan at all. To me his voice grates, his music's fairly monotonous. But I do marvel at the brilliance of Todd Haynes' experimental Bob Dylan biopic, I'm Not There.

D.A. Pennebaker, in my estimation, is still one of the greatest documentary filmmakers in history, and while The War Room is still Pennebaker's greatest accomplishment, his 1962 cinema vérité treatment of Bob Dylan's first tour of the UK, Don't Look Back, is almost as brilliant a fly-on-the-wall… Continued

New DVD Spin: I'm Not There, The Hottie and the Nottie, and More

The Weinstein Company's 'I'm Not There' dvd box art
The Weinstein Company

It's a generally low-key week for DVDs, but we have a couple of bright spots (or at least interesting ones), first with Todd Haynes' kaleidoscopic bio experiment, I'm Not There, and then with a collection of last year's Oscar-nominated short films, those tantalizing curiosities that most of us saw in 15-second clips during the Academy Awards. At the other end of the craptastic scale, this week hands us the Paris Hilton feature that's so infamously awful I hear a primitive South Sea island tribe makes sacrifices to it as… Continued
