DVD 123: ‘Ted,’ ‘The Bourne Legacy’ and ‘Following’

In our weekly column, we give you the lowdown on the weekly top three essential DVDs and Blu-ray releases.

This week’s releases are as varied as they are fantastic. For starters, we’ve got the vibrantly funny and crass “Ted,” starring Mark Wahlberg, another entry in the continuing action adventure franchise with “The Bourne Legacy,” as well as hit director Christopher Nolan’s first film “Following.” Laughter, action adventure and mystery — there’s plenty to enjoy in every genre!

Ted1. “Ted”
Starring: Mila Kunis, Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane, Joel McHale, Giovanni Ribisi, Patrick Warburton
Director: Seth MacFarlane
Studio: Universal Studios
Running Time: 114 min.
Rating: R

“Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane is behind one of the raunchiest comedies of the year, now on Blu-ray.

After a frightened young boy makes a wish for a best friend, his stuffed bear comes to life. The two are inseparable, even well into adulthood, though John (Wahlberg) and Ted (voiced by MacFarlane) are halted in a kind of perpetual adolescence. Will Ted keep John from marrying his long-time girlfriend Lori (Kunis) and becoming a responsible adult? Or will their unlikely friendship continue on at the expense of all else?

The Blu-ray edition has both the unrated and theatrical versions of the film, as well as audio commentary, making-of featurettes, deleted scenes, production notes, alternate takes, a gag reel and more.

This fantastic Blu-ray release also comes with a DVD and an UltraViolet digital copy.

The Bourne Legacy2. “The Bourne Legacy”
Starring: Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Joan Allen, Oscar Isaac, Albert Finney
Directors: Tony Gilroy
Studio: Universal Studios
Running Time: 135 min.
Rating: PG-13

The Bourne legacy continues with an all new high-stakes mission.

When the secret program that Aaron Cross (Renner) is part of is suddenly shut down, he becomes a liability to the government. Meanwhile, he’s dependent on medications (chems) provided by this program to stay sharp and strong. He tracks down the scientist (Weisz) to help him find the chems he needs, and to figure out who he really is. “Legacy” plays off the previous Bourne films and dives deeper into its world of shadowy government ops.

The special features on this high-octane release include audio commentary with director Tony Gilroy and crew, deleted scenes, production featurettes on wolves, action sequences and plot development.

This Blu-ray release also comes with a DVD and an UltraViolet digital copy.

Following3. “Following”
Starring: Jeremy Theobald, Alex Haw, Lucy Russell, John Nolan, Dick Bradsell
Director: Christopher Nolan
Studio: Criterion
Running Time: 70 min.
Rating: R

The Criterion Collection, which preserves and promotes exceptional films, is releasing the first feature from noted director Christopher Nolan.

A mystery writer obsessed with following strangers finds a unique opportunity to observe humanity up close when he falls in with an experienced thief, leading to a darker future than he could have ever imagined.

Special features on this remarkable release include a 2010 half hour interview with writer/director Christopher Nolan, as well as two different versions of the film, a script analysis, theatrical trailers, 2001 audio commentary and a leaflet with an essay on the film.
