In our weekly column, we give you the lowdown on the weekly top three essential DVDs and Blu-ray releases.
This high-impact week brings us action in the form of the 25th Anniversary Collection of “Die Hard,” the amusing animated family film “Hotel Transylvania” and the spooky scary found-footage sequel “Paranormal Activity 4.” These releases were all blockbusters at the box office, so perhaps they’d make a good addition to your home collection.
1. “Die Hard” 25th Anniversary Collection Blu-ray
Starring: Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, William Atherton, Jeremy Irons, Samuel L. Jackson, Justin Long and more
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Pick up this classic set before the release of “A Good Day to Die Hard,” on February 14.
One of the longest-running action franchises in the world makes a big splash with this special collection that celebrates the first four “Die Hard” films. In all four films, hard-boiled cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) faces threats and terrorism at every turn as he attempts to protect and defend his family and the United States from countless attacks.
This five-disc set includes the Blu-rays for “Die Hard,” “Die Hard 2: Die Harder,” “Die Hard with a Vengeance” and “Live Free or Die Hard.” The fifth disc, “Decoding Die Hard,” has a bunch of special features, which includes featurettes on the legacy of McClane, a look at the sidekicks, the enemies, the special effects and more.
2. “Hotel Transylvania” 3-D
Starring: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi, David Spade and Andy Samberg
Director: Genndy Tartakovsky
Studio: Sony Pictures
Running Time: 92 min.
Run by Dracula (Adam Sandler) himself, Hotel Transylvania is the best holiday destination for monsters and their families. It’s Dracula’s daughter Mavis’s (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday, and Dracula has pulled out all the stops to make sure that there’s plenty of fun and spooky scares for her big day. When a strange human (Andy Samberg) accidentally wanders onto the property, the monsters’ way of life may be threatened when he and Mavis strike up a friendship.
Special features on this release include audio commentary from the director, a special short animated film, deleted scenes, a look into the vocal talent of the film, behind-the-scenes featurettes, a music video and 3-D previews.
“Hotel Transylvania” comes with a 3-D Blu-ray, regular Blu-ray, DVD and a digital copy.
3. “Paranormal Activity 4”
Starring: Katie Featherston, Kathryn Newton, Matt Shively, Stephen Dunham, Alexondra Lee and Brady Allen
Director: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Running Time: 88 min.
Another entry in the scary found footage franchise picks up where the last one left off, five years after the disappearance of Katie and Hunter. When a strange woman and her young son move into a quiet suburban neighborhood, a family nearby begins to experience very strange, inexplicable phenomena.
The special features on this horror release include the original theatrical version, the unrated version of the movie and nearly 30 minutes of additional found footage.
This two-disc release comes with the unrated director’s cut on Blu-ray and DVD, plus a digital copy.
