New on DVD Week of Jan 08, 2013 - DVD 123: ‘Dredd,’ ‘Frankenweenie’ & ‘Hit and Run’

In our weekly column, we give you the lowdown on the weekly top three essential DVDs and Blu-ray releases.

This week’s releases are a strong bunch across the board, from the sci-fi action adventure “Dredd” to the animated children’s film “Frankenweenie” and the fun romantic adventure “Hit and Run.” These three films are packed to the brim with cutting edge content and fantastic special features, sure to please even the most picky cinema fans.

Dredd1. “Dredd”
Starring: Karl Urban, Lena Headey, Olivia Thirlby, Wood Harris, Warrick Grier, Porteus Xandau Steenkamp

In the not-too-distant future, a new kind of judge, jury and executioner (Karl Urban) undertakes the training of a new recruit (Olivia Thirlby). When they’re called to investigate a different drug that slows down the user’s experience of the world, they’re ushered into a dangerous high rise world with a vicious leader (Lena Headey).

There’s an enormous amount of special features on this release, including a retrospective of the franchise, as well as a look at the special effects, costumes and props, plenty of interviews with cast and crew, a look at the comic prequel and the theatrical trailer.

It’s available as 2-disc package that includes both a regular and a 3-D Blu-ray, as well as an UltraViolet digital copy.

Frankenweenie2. “Frankenweenie”
Starring: Charlie Tahan, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Robert Capron

Rating: PG

In this stop-motion animated film, a young boy’s heart is broken when his beloved pet (and star of his homemade monster movies) is accidentally killed. The boy, Victor, manages to bring the dog back to life, but the reanimated pet causes problems all over the neighborhood.

This release has the original short that inspired the film, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes and Easter eggs, and the Plain White T’s “Pet Sematary” music video.

“Frankenweenie” is available as a four-disc package that includes the Blu-ray, 3-D Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy.

Hit and Run3. “Hit and Run”
Starring: Kristen Bell, Dax Shepard, Bradley Cooper, Tom Arnold, Kal Bennett, Beau Bridges

Running Time: 101 min.
Rating: R

A former getaway driver (Dax Shepard) puts everything on the line when his girlfriend (Kristen Bell) asks him to drive her to Los Angeles, in direct violation of the witness protection program that he’s a part of. With the federal government and criminals hot on his tail, it’s an all-out race to Los Angeles as the thrills and danger mount.

The special features on this release include deleted scenes and a wide variety of BTS featurettes with interviews from Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell.

“Hit and Run” is available as a two-disc combo that comes with a Blu-ray, DVD and UltraViolet digital download.
