How do you follow up the rating smash that was John McCain's appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman last night? Maybe producers couldn't get Sarah Palin, but they got the next best thing: Tina Fey.
Defamer got its hands on a video clip from tonight's show, in which Fey breaks down the impersonation that's made her an Internet sensation.
"It's like a beautiful Alaskan windsong," she jokes to Letterman, citing influences from Reese Witherspoon in Election to the Minnesota-set film Fargo to her friend Paula's Midwestern grandmother. But she downplays her uncanny impersonation of the Alaskan governor: "Not since Sling Blade has there been a voice that anybody can do."
Fey said Palin "got lost in a corn maze" during her infamous interview with Katie Couric. "Every now and then I look at her and I think, 'That woman is exactly as smart as me. And that's not enough. "
Fey also responds to criticism that her impression of Palin is sexist: "That's crazy, because you have to be able to goof on the female politicans just as much. Otherwise, you're treating them like they're weaker."
