A beauty queen turned stage star, the unique Tallulah Bankhead was a genuine Southern belle, the daughter of a Congressional Speaker of the House and the granddaughter of a senator. Bankhead dazzled both London and New York in the 1920s with her bewitching presence, but became, perhaps unfortunately for her, far more famous for her tempestuous personality than for her onstage performances. She is best remembered for her deep, raspy, sultry voice, her theatrical habit of calling everyone "Daaahling", her spicy repartee and her flamboyant, hard-drinking, uninhibited lifestyle.
