Lanky, balding character player adept at comic, smarmy and "Everyman" portrayals. Tobolowsky started in stage productions at Southern Methodist College. He moved to L.A. after grad school and began collaborating with playwright Beth Henley. Tobolowsky appeared in several of Henley's stage productions, directed a few of her plays and co-wrote, with her and David Byrne, the laconic Texas comedy "True Stories" (1986). Tobolowsky has been quite memorable in both film comedies and dramas, first gaining notice with a humorous portrayal of French De Mille, the documentary narrator, in Jonathan Demme's
