Simon's eclectic screenplays encompassing black comedy ("Jennifer on My Mind", 1971) , light comedy (Bustin' Loose", 1981), and crime melodrama ("The Big Fix", 1978) amply prepared him for the darkly funny post-Holocaust drama, "Enemies, A Love Story" 1989). Simon's screenplay deftly balances the pathos and comedy of the Isaasc Bashevis Singer novel from which it was adapted.
