Robert Pattinson: A Critical Examination of His Hair, 2005 - 2008

We break down the star of Twilight's many looks.

I learned long ago that you've got to give the people what they want. And right now, the people seem to want Robert Pattinson. But who is he? I'll tell you. And then I'll break down his hair choices. Because that's what we do here at Film.com, we give and we give.

First off, Robert is the male lead in the upcoming film Twilight. Every time he's mentioned online thousands of fans flock to wherever the article is and comment something to the effect of "He's amazing!!!" I can respect that. I once felt that way about Natalie Portman, before she went all corporate on me. However, when I was researching Robert I couldn't help but notice his hair. I did a little more digging and realized Robert's hair is nothing short of astounding. The fella makes, and has made, some interesting follicle choices.

Now then, unlike a lot of these so called "movie websites" I've actually met Rob P. He had crazy hair then too. This was back in July, and we talked about many fun things up to and including Twilight. I may pull that interview out of the archives and run it if "the fans" feel like they need more Pattinson in their daily lives. I live but to serve.

So then I think it's time we break this guy down. His hair, his vibe, his future earning potential. Because if not now, when? It's a Pattinson party and you're all invited. Buckle up!

Robert Pattinson

May, 2005 - at the House of Wax premiere

Our fashion expert says:
I call this one "The Chace." This messy, banged do is channeling Chace Crawford on a bad day. It has plenty of lift, probably from a diffuser, but the bangs ground it in reality.

Style time: 10 minutes

Laremy Says:
He has the rosiest cheeks in this one, almost as if he's channeling first-day-of-high-school Bella. This is the only photo without chest hair too, was teen Robert oppposed to it back in the day?

Overall verdict:
We're glad he got rid of the quasi-beard.

Robert Pattinson

November, 2005 - at the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire London premiere

Our fashion expert says:
You'd have to call this one "The Hugh." It's foppish, the quintessential Hugh Grant look. This do is all about placing the hairs where they belong without ever putting brush to head.

Style time: 5 minutes

Laremy Says:
Definitely the most natural of the Pattinson looks. It says "I could write you a lullabye or save you from a skidding van - but I'd much rather wear red velvet."

Overall verdict:
Where did the paleness go? The most un-vampirical look of the bunch.

Robert Pattinson

March, 2006 - at the Sony Ericsson Empire Film Awards

Our fashion expert says:
I christen this "The Magellan." Clearly, we’ve got a gel product working in this style. After combing and letting the gel set, you know it’s ready when it makes that crunch sound.

Style time: 20 minutes

Laremy Says:
My least favorite of the bunch so far as hair goes. But it's nice to see those teeth...

Overall verdict:
This is as short as the hair would get. We were headed for length from here on out.

Robert Pattinson

July, 2007 - at the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Los Angeles premiere

Our fashion expert says:
The Mousse-oline! For this look, Robert probably rolled out of bed, flipped his hair to one side and brushed a healthy handful of mousse through it. Ready to go!

Style time: 30 Seconds

Laremy Says:
Whoa. It loooks a little bit like he might have gotten stuck in a vacuum. This look seems way more Jacob to me.

Overall verdict:
Still, we see start of the creature that would one day become Edward. He looks pleasant, though slightly worried - a winning combination for love in Forks, WA.

Robert Pattinson

June, 2008 - At the 2008 MTV Movie Awards

Our fashion expert says:
He went above and beyond for this intricate style, going so far as to sculpt horns in his own hair. Masterful use of pomade here. A true dare devil.

Style time: 1 Hour

Laremy Says:
The silver jacket and black shirt, slightly unbuttoned, say "I was born as a vampire in 1918. I've got class and refinement to burn."

Overall verdict:
This was probably after shooting Twilight so he's clearly in the mood for blood.

Robert Pattinson

September, 2008 - At the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards

Our fashion expert says:
This photo is from an appearance at the MTV VMAs, but Robert is clearly channeling his Twilight alter-ego, which as turns out is his best look. His coif is messy enough to give him that "I may just bite your neck" edge, but reserved enough to meet the parents.

Style time: 15 minutes

Laremy Says:
When I met him he looked more like his June look, so it's interesting to see him tone it down. Regardless, Charlie would still probably hate him on site, no questions asked.

Overall verdict:
This is the Robert Pattinson we now know will be launched into super stardom come November. Is the world ready?
