Tall, handsome leading man with classic, angular features. Burke began his career on the daytime serial "As the World Turns", which led to his being cast in "The Chosen" (1981) and in the TV series, "The Gangster Chronicles" (1981). He then headed an experimental teaching project which stressed learning via the arts and humanities.

Burke returned to acting with several commercials and the lead role in Hal Hartley's "The Unbelievable Truth" (1989). His deadpan performance as an ex-convict who returns to his Long Island hometown won critical plaudits, as well as the starring role in the Continued
