biography
Stage-trained European leading man of the 1970s with dark, striking, androgynous features who entered films in 1960 but came to attention with Luis Bunuel's "Belle de Jour" (1967) and appeared in a host of international films by such avant-garde filmmakers as Liliana Cavani ("I Cannibali/The Cannibals" 1970), Bernardo Bertoloucci ("The Conformist" 1970) and Philippe Garrel ("La Cicatrice Interieure/Inner Scar" 1972). Clementi was arrested on a drug charge in 1972, served 17 months in prison before the charge was dropped for insuffient evidence and then wrote a book about his experiences.
