New Zealand based director whose debut feature "Desperate Remedies" (1994), established a unique aesthetic, playing "The Piano" (1993) against loud, self-conscious campiness, and lushly deconstructing colonial myths. Wells co-directed "Desperate Remedies" with Stewart Main, with whom he has collaborated since 1984 on documentaries and dramatic shorts.
