Made a feature-length documentary while at Harvard and worked in various production capacities for Louis De Rochemont before establishing himself as a director of educational films and documentaries. Roemer directed his first fiction feature, "Nothing But a Man", in 1964, receiving critical plaudits for his low key and intelligent treatment of a racial theme. His sardonic comedy, "The Plot Against Harry", was produced in 1969 but languished in post-production limbo for twenty years before being released to widespread acclaim in 1989.
