The filmmaker most responsible for bringing worldwide attention to Greek cinema in its renaissance after WWII, director-writer-producer Michael Cacoyannis has done his finest and most important work with a series of rough-hewn, open-air films fairly bursting with a passion not confined to the volatile characters peopling his work. He has also shown talent at literary adaptation, his flair for melodrama well-suited to the Greek tragedies and other works he has brought to the screen and stage.
