Striking blond actress of the Italian stage who made her screen debut in 1970 and was acclaimed for her role in Elio Petri's "The Working Class Goes to Heaven" (1971). Melato has appeared in several films directed by Lina Wertmuller--she turned in a superb comic performance as a spoiled aristocrat in the social comedy, "Swept Away" (1974)--and has also worked with Vittorio de Sica, Claude Chabrol and Mario Monicelli. She made her American screen debut opposite Ryan O'Neal in the farcical "So Fine" (1981).
