We're On Board With an Unbreakable Sequel
Is M. Night Shyamalan is considering a sequel to his stunning reinvention of the superhero genre?

I'm going to try not to get too excited over here. There are movie projects you dream about. And I've been dreaming of an Unbreakable sequel since I first left the theater back in 2000. I don't have many compadres in this regard, but our legion has grown strong throughout the years. The bottom line is this: if you don't want an Unbreakable sequel, you're less cool than you think. M. Night Shyamalan was met with a lot of ire when his outside-the-box, almost watershed movie came out in 2000. The trailer captivated almost everyone who saw it (it remains one of the most intriguing trailers ever produced). People wanted to know just what the hell the guy who made The Sixth Sense had up his sleeve this time. The reaction to the film's release went something like this: It's a friggin' comic-book movie? And it's boring! Where's the action? Some found even more excuses to hate it, thinking the ending to be unnecessary when in fact it's the only thing that makes the story complete. But is it complete? Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson have been making noise for years about an Unbreakable sequel. According to them, it was always intended as a trilogy. But when audiences left disgruntled, Shyamalan began second-guessing himself. As irony would have it, though, it's Unbreakable memorabilia that Night gets asked to sign most. It's Unbreakable that has the most rabid fanbase. It's his one great cult classic and people never stop asking him about it. Will there be a sequel, Night? Was it really supposed to be a trilogy? What happens to Elijah Price and David Dunn? Elijah Price is one of my favorite movie creations; the character is Samuel L. Jackson's best work this side of my man from Inglewood -- Jules. And if M. Night ever does get around to making another film with this character, it can only be titled Breakable (thank you, Harry Knowles). Don't ask me about the third movie. Fixable? Here's the skinny from the poor soul who put his name atop The Happening: "I tell you I get asked about it all the time, so it's not [an idea] I ever forget," Shyamalan told MTV News. "I genuinely just asked this question the other day — should I make 'Unbreakable 2'?" Let me help you out, Night ... Yes. Yes, damnit. You make these movies and you make them good, you hear? Take your time with this. They have to be personal, like the original. You did something to the superhero genre that nobody had ever done in movies. You made it real. You took away the flash and glamour in a way that would have made Alan Moore proud (that is if Alan Moore had the ability of being pleased). At the end of the movie, you created something truly beautiful: an origin story unlike any other, with well-defined character arcs, the best issue number one I could have possibly asked for and it came as a complete surprise. Who knew going in it was an issue one? Now I need issue two. I need Breakable. Do it for the fans. Do it for all the people that actually threw down money to see The Happening. More importantly, Night, do it for yourself. You need to focus. You seem lost. So come back home. But make sure the heart's there. Because if it isn't, we'll know and that would just be lame. Without your heart and personal touch in the sequel, I'd sooner dream up my own David Dunn adventures. Hell, it's not like I haven't got eight years worth of those anyway. Most Popular Stories
