One of the most influential figures of Hollywood's golden era who, from 1924 to 1951, guided MGM through its reign as America's greatest studio, with "more stars than there are in the heavens."

Immigrating to Canada, and then the US, Mayer set up a successful chain of movie theaters in New England before moving into distribution, scoring a huge profit with "The Birth of a Nation" (1915). He then turned to production with the Alco company, which later changed its name to Metro. Mayer went independent in 1917, forming Louis B.
