Flamboyant pianist and entertainer famous for his carefully waved hair, pearly smile, outlandish jewelry and costumes, breathy, insinuating speech, and his showy playing style on the ivories. Liberace first attained his great popularity with middle-aged and older women during the early 1950s; although the one attempt to make him a movie star (1955's "Sincerely Yours") failed, he starred in several variety series which made him a great deal of money. His lush recordings of easy-listening instrumental music sold millions over the years, and he was a great favorite of Las Vegas stage shows. Continued
