Carlino is a smoothly efficient scenarist especially adept at making the bizarre or metaphysical believable, as with "Seconds" (1966) "Resurrection" (1980) and "Haunted Summer" (1988). He also has met with success as a director, helming and scripting effective adaptations of Yukio Mishima's "The Sailor Who Fell From Grace with the Sea" (1975) and Pat Conroy's "The Great Santini" (1979).
