biography

Art director of the late 1930s who became a scriptwriter in the mid-1940s, establishing a multi-film relationship with director Kimibasuro Yoshimura and contributing to the films of Kenji Mizoguchi, Kon Ichikawa and others. Shindo formed a production company in 1950 with Yoshimura and actress Nobuko Otowa (who starred in many of his films) and turned out works ranging from comedies to horror films.

Shindo made his directorial debut with "The Story of a Beloved Wife" (1951) and received international acclaim for his highly personal examination of post-nuclear trauma, "Children of Hiroshima" Continued
