Claiming inspiration from the 1991's Thelma & Louise and Francis Ford Coppola's Rumble Fish from 1983, William Rast gave us edgy and bold looks for fall. In a primarily monochromatic palette of black and white, denim and leather took an '80s turn with touches of fringe, black sequined lace and metal studs. The women's silhouettes combined strong shoulders that narrowed with blouses tucked into skinny jeans. The men were boxy on top as well, in leather and denim jackets; however, most wore fitted long shirts that could have doubled as mini-dresses over their jeans. The women's looks exemplified the strong and free spirits of Thelma and Louise while the men seemed slightly feminized. The fringe and lace adornments on sleeves and shoulders were not as creatively placed as I would have hoped. Instead of a modern rendition of their inspirations, the styles were channeled from items found in most country singers' wardrobes or on Linda Richman. However, something that caught me by surprise was the return of the denim jacket. Just when I thought designers were through with the American classic, it's popped up again. And in the William Rast show, the jean jacket is new and improved. All in all, I admire the influences and the attitude the designers at William Rast channeled. But, in my opinion, some of the looks were a little too '80s a little too soon. I'm ready for the strong shoulders, but let me ease into the rest. Most Popular Stories
