Dancer, choreographer and college lecturer who served as script girl on Robert Altman's "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" (1971) and later wrote the multi-layered screenplays for two of his most acclaimed films, "Thieves Like Us" (1974) and "Nashville" (1975). Tewkesbury has subsequently branched out on her own as a writer-director of note. While her feature films have been of variable quality, she has demonstrated a sensitive understanding of social issues, and of the problems faced by women who break with social conventions, in the well-received TV movies "The Tenth Month" (1979), "The Acorn People"
