Jennifer Hudson pulled an Ashlee Simpson at the Super Bowl on Sunday, lip-synching her powerful rendition of the national anthem. Why?

Turns out it was a game-time call by Super Bowl producer Ricky Minor, who insisted Hudson sing to a pre-recorded track.

"That's the right way to do it," Minor told Usmagazine.com. "There's too many variables to go live. I would never recommend any artist go live, because the slightest glitch would devastate the performance."

It was undoubtedly an emotional day for Hudson, who made her first public appearance after the brutal shooting deaths of her mother and brother in October.
