Noted Scandanavian stage actor who arrived in the US in 1914 and made his film debut with Thomas Ince's studio the following year. Hersholt became one of the leading stars of the silent era, but his foreign accent reduced him to featured character parts and secondary roles with the advent of sound. He was active in a number of humanitarian causes and an honorary Oscar is awarded each year in his name.
